No Plea Bargains for DWI in New Jersey
Most people who watch police procedural TV shows are familiar with the idea of a plea bargain. The prosecutor can offer a lesser charge with a lighter sentence to a defendant if they agree to plea guilty to the lesser charge (or charges). Also, a defendant may ask a prosecutor what they could do for them if they agreed to plead guilty to one of more offenses.
In New Jersey this is no longer an option for those being charged with DWI. The Attorney General for the state has directed all municipal courts and prosecutors in New Jersey to not offer plea bargains to those charged with DWI. It is part of a state wide and nation wide crack down on DWI as our society becomes increasingly less tolerant of the crime.
