California Considering Lowering Drinking Age
There is a ballot measure being pushed by the California Secretary of State to lower the state's drinking age from 21 to 18. This is relevant to DUI statistics. Since 1982 there has been a decrease in DUI across all age groups. Since the data has been collected from two years before the national drinking age was raised to 21, it is inconclusive proof that raising the drinking age has had any effect on the prevalence of DUI.
The argument being made for the Minimum Drinking Age Initiative Statute on the November ballot is that 18 year olds have all the burden of citizenship except being able to drink. Therefore, for the sake of equality, the minimum drinking age should be lowered.
Another reason the State would have interest in having this measure pass is the great increase in tax revenues from the sale of alcohol to those eighteen and up.
